CEC Household Waste Collection consultation

Cheshire East Council has now published the result of their consultation regarding proposed changes to Household Waste Collection.
Bollington Town Council has previously posted our response to this consultation. In that statement we voiced our strong opposition to Options 2 and 4 (namely moving to 3 weekly black bin collections), which includes Cheshire East’s ‘preferred option’. We based our opposition on health, environmental and cost grounds and provided solid reasoning for each.
The consultation has found that of the 6,257 respondents, 84% oppose the implementation of CEC’s ‘preferred’ option, with only 13% supporting it. This overwhelming response speaks for itself. Among the reasons given for opposition, many echoed BTC’s concerns about health and environmental impact, along with worries of the effect on implementing a complicated schedule would have on the elderly and infirm. Moreover, when asked how CEC could support those negatively impact, mention was made of providing ‘easier access to HWRCs (Household Waste Recycling Centres)’. Bollington’s HWRC has just been closed indefinitely by CEC.
In light of this report, Bollington Town Council is reaffirming its opposition of a three weekly bin collection. Members of BTC have written to CEC and our local MP Tim Roca to express our opposition and we shall be writing again. You can read those letters on our webpage .
Furthermore, members of BTC intend to speak at the meeting about this subject being held on the 27th of November. We intend to publish the statements being made at that meeting for our residents to see.
BTC acknowledges that the Cheshire East Council finds itself in a very difficult financial position and that hard decisions have to be made. However we argue that not only are these proposed changes a threat to the environment and the health of our residents, it will not provide the cost savings suggested. As such it represents nothing more than an entirely avoidable act of self harm.
