Path Between the Waterhouse Mill Site and Adlington Road Play Area

Because of the mounting delays we have sent Cheshire East two schemes to ensure that we have a 3 metre wide path between the Waterhouse Mill Development and the Adlington Road Play Area. Bellway homes have now installed the 3 metre wide bridge over the River Dean and will finish the access ramps to the bridge overr the next few weeks. You will remember that the issue in any path passing beneath the Middlewood Way Viaduct is water penetration from the decking above which is causing frost damage to the under arch brickwork and slivers of brick are falling down and could injure pedestrians. £30k was obtained from the Waterhouse Mill development to waterproof one arch.

The two schemes are show below as interim solutions which will enable Cheshire East to fund one of them and carry out the larger scale waterproofing of the whole of the Viaduct as part of a longerr term planned investment. This scheme will probably cost about £400k and would involve stripping the decking, sorting out the drainage and asphalting the surface. the residue iof the £30k left over from funding one of these interim solutions, probably £25 or more, could be put into that pot.

As you know we have been trying to progress a path on the other side of the River through the small arch but this is proving difficult and would involve what Cheshire East say is a less safer access onto Adlington Road.

The Rangers are working on the steps on the Waterhouse Mill side of the Viaduct to open them up to access the Middlewood Way which is good but that would not provide the best solution for access to the Play Area or the Recreation Ground by having to go up and them down the other side of the Viaduct to reach these sites. It would not cater for cyclists and those with less mobilty who need to avoid steps. The Town Council is offering to manage either of the following options on behalf of Cheshire East as we did with the Skate Park and the Bowling Pavillion. How hard can it get to say yes to one of these - lets us see.

The first involves a wooden covered walkway estimated to be about £2k-4k with side fencing. The view is towards Adlington Road from the New Bridge.

The second option would be to net the arch as shown in the graphic. The net would not be green but stone coloured to blend in. It would be fine mesh and could be supplied and fitted for £2k acording to a quoation obtained today from HUCK Construction Safety Netting. The view is towards Adlington Road from the New Bridge
