Geophysical mapping of the ocean floor using autonomous survey vessels
Monday 9 September 2024
SciBar is science in a bar – an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Vale Inn in Bollington.
At our September talk, Tom Darnell will describe how ocean exploration continually reveals previously unseen information about the ocean floor. In almost all instances areas uncovered are being “seen” for the first time. Geophysics serves as the foundation for this exploration, dating back to the early days of sonar technology used to detect World War I submarines. While the fundamental physics and methodologies remain consistent, technology has rapidly evolved.
Tom will delve into the advancements in AI and autonomy driving forwards ocean floor mapping and modelling of the sub-surface below the sands. He will also explore its applications in modern society, including offshore wind development, construction projects, and maritime safety.
No charge, all welcome. Vale Inn, Adlington Road, talk begins 6.30pm. Details at bollingtonscibar.co.uk
